David Harrod’s roots run deep in Louisville, Kentucky. Born and raised near Holy Trinity and reared in the halls of Trinity High School, David embodies the spirit of community and continues to honor our community as one of our longest standing donors.

As the President of Harrod Concrete and Stone and Harrod Transport Company, he leads the family businesses founded by his father in the mid-1950s. Today, his daughter also works alongside him, and hopefully, her children will continue this entrepreneurial legacy. But David’s story extends beyond his professional achievements.

Meet a Beacon House Donor

A Personal Connection to the Beacon House

David’s introduction to Beacon House was serendipitous yet transformative. Several of his friends, already involved with Beacon House, were on their own alcohol recovery journeys along with David. Intrigued by their experiences, David found himself drawn to the mission of Beacon House during its earlier years when the organization was struggling to stay afloat.

“At that time, the operations and funding were so small that we’d sometimes pass a hat around to make sure the next month’s expenses were covered,” he recalls.

Inspired by the dedication and impact of the Beacon House, David, along with these friends, decided to invest in its future. “We were so impressed with what they do and how they supported men,” David says. “A lot of good seeds were planted early on, and during my first few years of friendship with the nonprofit, we helped it keep going forward and reach new heights.”

The Importance of the 12-Steps & Aftercare

David’s commitment to the Beacon House grew stronger over the years. He served as a board member and even Chairman of the Board, guiding the organization through crucial phases of growth. His belief in the program’s strict adherence to the 12-steps foundation and their unwavering support for the men in their program is steadfast.

“They fundamentally adopt the men in the program and are with them the whole way. They give everyone exactly what they need to be successful,” he emphasizes.

For David, the success of the Beacon House is deeply personal. “When people go completely through the program, their lives are changed. It’s so heartwarming to see how their lives are transformed. If you’re not in one of the programs or haven’t walked the walk, it’s hard to know what it’s like.”

He firmly believes when you pour into a cause like this, you get back so much more. David’s dedication has always extended beyond financial support. He and his son have volunteered at Beacon House, hosting cookouts and even serving Christmas meals. This makes a lot of sense when you hear about his official training in BBQ food! Even in the midst of his busy schedule, he enjoys barbecuing and playing in a blues band. When he can combine food with community and compassion, it’s all the better!

He describes how even when he and his friends would find themselves exhausted after a full day of cooking, serving, and spending time with the men in the program at the Beacon House, “We would have this feeling deep inside that we’d done something good. The men were always appreciative. They deserve second chances, and we were able to give them good examples.”

Golf Scramble at the Beacon House

A highlight of David’s involvement is his participation with our organization is the annual golf outing fundraiser, named in honor of his brother-in-law Dick Barrett. As a corporate sponsor, David will once again take to the greens this year, golfing with a team and encouraging others to join. “It’s one of the nicest courses in the city, so I invite you to come out for a nice day while supporting what I think is one of the most worthy causes in town.”

David Harrod’s journey with Beacon House is a testament to the power of community and the profound impact someone can have when they give back.

“There are a lot of resources for rehab and addiction, but Beacon House is different and successful because they stay true to their convictions and they’re so aware of what it takes to rebuild a life of sobriety. That’s why I don’t just support it financially, but I recommend it to any friend or family who has a loved one in need of this kind of care,” David concludes.

Through his dedication, David Harrod has not only helped us transform the lives of countless individuals but has also ensured that the legacy of compassion and community support continues for generations to come.
