Mother Theresa once said, “Love has to be put into action and that action is service.”
In 2017, the Kirk family and their friends began a yearly initiative of serving the Beacon House by bringing donations–both monetary gifts and essential items– during the holiday season. They began this tradition not only because of the spirit of giving that is top of mind around Christmas, but out of love for their family member, Michael E. Kirk Jr., who left this earth too soon.
Michael was a resident of the Beacon House in 2015 as well as a beloved son, brother, friend, and more. Each December, Michael’s family and friends come together to bring their donations like those pictured below. All of this is done in his memory!
The Kirk family’s donations meet residents at a moment of real need. Many men arrive at the Beacon House with few personal belongings and often lacking basic necessities. Thoughtful gifts such as warm socks, blankets, and personal care items provide immediate comfort, restore dignity, and help residents focus on healing and recovery rather than unmet daily needs. These simple but meaningful acts reflect compassion in action and carry Michael’s legacy forward in a deeply personal way.
“We know these donations will directly benefit the Beacon House residents during the holiday season and beyond. Our goal is to help to ease the burdens of daily life for those working hard to rebuild their lives in sobriety.” Tiffany, a family member, shared with us.
What a great example of compassion and remembrance! Not only can these acts of service support a healthy bereavement process, but it offers a way to continue a loved one’s impact. Anyone who has been in recovery knows how important it is to give back. To help others who are in a place you once were. It’s priceless!
Multiple studies have proven the power of giving and volunteering to process and honor the loss of a loved one. In fact, did you know 90% of people who serve as a way to memorialize a loved one choose to remain connected with their selected cause ongoing? This is clearly an amazing action that doesn’t just benefit a nonprofit but the family and the legacy of the loved one as well.
We commend the Kirk family and their friends for their commitment to supporting the Beacon House and sober living along with honoring Michael.
Our CEO Russ Read reflected on the many years the Kirk family has kept this tradition and the impact it has:
“Michael’s memory lives on through the family’s generosity, kindness and compassion for our residents. Their donations help our men by supplying essential items critical to their continuing care. We very much appreciate how they honor the memory of Michael by joining our men on their road to recovery.”
Our organization is immensely grateful. Michael’s journey, though far too short, continues to inspire those who knew him.
“His memory lives on through these special donations and the ongoing support provided by the Beacon House.”
